Postmortem Photography

I am taking class on art history and for the culminating activity I have to pick a culture and choose a paradigm of that is specific to it.  I want to do the assignment on a culture that was never really explored in the class so I can learn something new and not choose something that is obvious (such as pyramids being a paradigm of Egypt).  Anyways, I have always been really interesting in the Victorian period so I am going to write my paper on that culture and explain how postmortem photography is a paradigm of it.

Postmortem photographs are basically pictures of the deceased.  It became very common in the 19th century to take photos of family members that had recently passed away as a form of commemorating their life.  Additionally, photographs came at a much lower cost than the previous tradition of portrait paintings.

This stuff is definitely disturbing considering the social norms today, but there is something really hauntingly beautiful about them and I think they embody the period very well.

Band Crush: Timber Timbre

I recently discovered this band and it is sooooo good and Canadian!  Their music is described as "Canadian folk", but what I heard so far is really reminiscent of Dead Man's Bones, which is certainly not a bad thing.  Both use similar instruments, feature male vocalists singing in a low range,  and create a haunting atmosphere.
Here are some highlights of their newest album, Creep on Creepin' On:

Timber Timbre- Black Water

Timber Timbre- Bad Ritual

And here is a Dead Man's Bones song if you haven't heard of them yet:

Outfit

I apologize for the quality. I'm at school and I used my laptop camera because I do not have a tripod for my Nikon yet.

The shirt is from H&M and the skirt is from American Apparel.

Leopard Coat

So leopard coats are my biggest winter lust right now but I am super particular about what I want/ I already have a winter coat/ I'm trying to only buy gifts for people right now.  My obsession started when saw the movie, Factory Girl, and Sienna Miller (portraying Edie Sedgwick) was wearing the most perfect coat.

Amazing, right? And here's the real Edie

Anyways, I've seen a couple on Asos and Nasty Gal but none seem good enough to actually spend the money on.
